History

Vocational Education in Longford was established in 1934 with classes held in the building that is now Gearty’s Solicitors.  In 1948, the Vocational School moved to what is now the office of LWETB on the Battery Road.  In 1983, a new school building was erected in Templemichael in Longford Town and was named Oliver Plunkett which offered both Second Level and Further Education (PLC) Courses. The name was changed and is currently known as Templemichael College.  It is the only co-educational school in Longford Town.  The students study a wide range of subjects both academic and practical at both higher and ordinary level.  The students sit their Junior Cert examination after three years and their Leaving Cert after five years

Present accommodation includes specialist rooms to cater for Science, Home Economics, Material Technology (wood)/Construction Studies, Material Technology (metal)/Engineering, Drama, Childcare, Drawing, Computer Studies and Beauty Therapy.  There are also general classrooms, a canteen, PLC room, a lecture hall, a staff room, offices, playing fields etc.

Further Education

The college has a history of developing innovative educational programmes to meet emerging trends and in particular providing further education to students from Longford town, and surrounding counties.   Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of Post Leaving Certificate courses which helps to further their employment prospects.  Post Leaving Certificate courses are full time courses of one or two year duration.

Templemichael College has clearly demonstrated the ability to manage change by the development and enlargement of its further education sector and by introduction of the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme at second level.  In Templemichael College we endeavour to help students reach their full potential in both curricular and extra-curricular activities.  While the school is proud of its achievements to date, it recognises that it is operating in a rapidly changing society and faces a range of challenges as it develops and grows.

This plan is a key element in the process of charting the way forward for the college over the next few years.
